This fish likes a good mature aquarium and reacts very badly to fish keepers who show scant regard to water changes that cause big fluctuations in chemistry. Please treat this little guy with respect and use ‘Aquatest’ to be sure to get it right, so that you can enjoy this fish at its finest. It does best in a planted tank with bog wood and loves soft peaty water. Given these conditions, it will show you its true beauty and give you breeding coloration. This is a fish you will really enjoy. It also does well in the average community aquarium, where it generally minds its own business.

The male, which is often the case, has the better colouring, showing much more red colour, while the female has more yellow.
|

| BREEDING |
|
As is typical in Barb breeding, the Checker Barb scatters its eggs and eats them if given half a chance. Be sure to move either the eggs or the parents as soon as the eggs are laid. The fry hatch very quickly.
