Aquarium plants resistant to plant-eating fish

Many people have requested an easy accessible list of plants which is particularly suitable for aquaria with cichlids or other plant eating fish. Some plants are recommended because they contain substances that does not taste too good (X) - fx. tanins and phenols - others because they are very sturdy (XX) and contain a lot of ligning; but we also recommend plants which is grown on roots or rocks (XXX) because they are firmly attached to the substrate and thereby resist fish that try to pull up plants from the substrate. In addition, some of the very fast growing plants (XXXX) are recommended, too. The latter may be able to keep up with the grazing rate caused by the fish.

Take the following list as our suggestions for more fish-proof plants that should be able to thrive in co-existence with plant eating fish. However, always remember to feed the fish with supplement foods containing enough plant matter. This usually reduces the plant eating behaviour. Products such as sera Flora and sera Spirlina Tablets.
