The pH-value expresses the ratio between acids and bases. The decisive factor is whether more acid reacting or more alkaline reacting substances occur.
Most fish and plants from South America and South East Asia live in soft, slightly acid water (pH-value between 6-7). Malawi and Tanganyika cichlids prefer values between 7.5 and 8.5.
