Convict Cichlid

Convict Cichlid - Photo
Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum
HABITS This is one of the most common Cichlids available due to its effortless ability to breed. Many unsuspecting aquarists have been given this good-looking fish only to find that it has dug up their tank, has beaten up the other fish, and then suddenly has produced hundreds of offspring. Having said that, this fish is fascinating and is often an aqaurist's first success at breeding an egglayer. It obviously is not for the community but is OK with fish of a similar size.
SIZE These fish grow to around 4-5 inches.

SEXING The male has brighter colours than the female.
BREEDING These fish are very simple to breed. The pair will select a site on a rock or inverted flowerpot and will easily spawn. They are very good parents and protect their young well. The fry become free swimmers in about a week.
