These fish originate from Africa where the name Tilapia means simply ‘a fish’ this comes from the fact that they are a major protein food source and adapt well to many condition and are easy to breed. Many of the Talapia are mouth brooders which makes for an interesting fish to keep although these are not. They grow fast and can be very aggressive especially when breeding. You should have a larger than average aquarium for these fish and give lots of hide holes.

Tilapia all spawn in the same manner. After forming a bond, a pair will either dig a pit or clean a stone. These fish will only spawn on hard surfaces. They lay between 1,000 and 2,000 eggs, after which they move their young to the pits they have dug to take care of them.
