Jewel Cichlid

Jewel Cichlid - Photo
Hemichromis bimaculatus
HABITS This fish is not one for the community aquarium, which is sad, because its colours and coulour variations make it a really stunning fish. This pugnacious fish has a habit of digging up plants, and should only live with other tough guys in an aquarium without plants.
SIZE These fish can grow to about 15 cm, but are usually smaller.

SEXING Both sexes' body colours undergo a change when it is time for breeding. Their sides, which normally are a yellowish-green, take on an intense red hue that are sprinkled with gleaming blue dots.
BREEDING You will seldom encounter trouble between a pair of these fish once they have mated. Should you have a male that is ready to spawn and a female that is not, the end result, however, is usually a dead or mangled female. When introducing a pair, be sure there is plenty of refuge available for the female to protect herself.
