Texas Cichlid

Texas Cichlid - Photo
Cichlasoma carpinte (cyanoguttatum)
HABITS Aggressive and territorial, the Texas cichlids live in the lakes and rivers of Texas and Northeast Mexico. Although the juvenile cichlids get along with similarly sized fish, the adults need their own tanks. These fish definitely do best in larger aquariums containing at least 50 gallons. Texas cichlids are also very adaptable to temperatures in the lower end of the scale. There should be areas of rocks and bogwood so they could develop territories and prevent fighting. These fish appreciate floating plants and a sandy substrate. Although hardy fishes, they are sensitive to old water and need frequent water changes to keep them in good health. Use 'Aquatest' to ensure the best water quality for these beautiful fish.
SIZE These fish grow to a maximum of 12 inches.

SEXING The males develop a large nuchal hump on their forehead from 3 years of age. They are very attractive fish with electric blue spots and large orange eyes.
BREEDING Breeding begins when these fish reach 4 inches. They are open breeders and need well oxygenated water to spawn. They can lay up to 500 eggs at a time. Both parents care for the young, but can become easily frightened at this stage and may eat the fry.
