Three Spot

Three Spot - Photo
Cichlasoma trimaculatum
HABITS These stunning, but large predatory fish do not get their good looks until they reach at least 3 inches. Their usual method of feeding is to conceal themselves and pounce on any prey they can swallow.
SIZE Males can grow to 15 inches while females are not quite as large.

SEXING These fish can only be sexed when they are larger. The males show more colour and have fins that are longer and decorated with white spots.
BREEDING These fish are difficult to pair. In an aquarium, they seem to need to breed in a cave situation, unlike in the wild, where they breed freely in the open. The female lays around 800 eggs, guarding them until they hatch about 3 days later.
