THE FISH
Black Ruby Barb
Barbus nigrofasciatus
| HABITS |
|
When in full colour, these fish are absolutely stunning. To achieve this, you need good water and good food. If you use the sera menu below and use 'Aquatest', you will be well rewarded since this fish really does have the "WOW" factor. Another plus is that these barbs are really peaceful fish, with only very tiny fish being at a risk. They do best in a well-planted aquarium with a good open area. They function best in a group. The males are the real gems and it is believed that they colour up best if there are more males then females. Generally this is an underrated fish because it is tainted with the reputation of its look alike, the Tiger Barb, which has a bad reputation of being 'Nippy'.

| BREEDING |

These fish normally mate early in the day, when the sun is getting high. The males' colouring becomes very intense. The females drop serious amounts of eggs, which hatch in just over a day. These fish are quite easy to breed in the aquarium.
