Boesemann's Rainbow Fish

Boesemann's Rainbow Fish - Photo
Melanotaenia boesemani
HABITS Amongst the most beautiful of the rainbow fish, these fish show a unique break in coloration. As adults, their heads and front areas are blue to grey, which highlights to almost black whilst in breeding mode. Their rear halves are yellow to orange. These fish are found in the wild in a wide variety of pH levels, but adapt very well to life in an aquarium. It has been found that softer water will generally bring about better results. As in nature, these fish do best in groups and in large numbers.
SIZE These fish grow to around 6 inches, although 4 inches is more common in the aquarium.
FOOD In order to maintain their fascinating colours, these fish require a good, varied diet. In their wild state, they would be considered carnivores, eating crustaceans, insects, and insect larvae; although algae and plants also seem to fit well into their menu.
