Golden Barb
(Schuberti Barb)
Barbus semifasciolatus schuberti
| HABITS |
|
This is one of the best 'starter' fish in the hobby. As do all fish, it enjoys really good water, but can tolerate very harsh conditions, making it a good choice for taking beginners through the maturation stage, which is the first 4-6 weeks of the aquarium's life. Once through this stage, the Golden Barb will reward you with deep yellow colours. It lives a very long life, surviving many of the ups and downs a newcomer faces when becoming a fish keeper. The Golden Barb tames very easily and gets along with many of the community fish as long as it is well fed, which is rather unique for the Barb breed. It looks best in a group and shows its best colouring against the greenery in a tank planted with hardy plants.

| BREEDING |
|
These fish breed using the typical Barb style of egg scattering. The parents eat the eggs as fast they lay them, preventing your community aquarium from becoming too populated.
