THE FISH
Golden Pencilfish
Nannostomus beckfordi
| HABITS |
|
One of the most common of the pencil fish seen in aquarium stores, the Golden has the classic pencil fish shape. Displaying great colour when well taken care of, the male is an absolute stunner during spawning season. To keep this fish at its best, it should be kept in a small group, with good water and good food. Using 'Aquatest' and a sera diet is a sure way of having healthy, energetic fish. A planted aquarium with subtle lighting will give you the best opportunity for viewing this fish. Once the Golden goes into the mating routine, you will be amazed at the length of time it takes since this is a male with staying power.

| BREEDING |
|
The courting ritual of this fish is a joy to watch. The male sidles up to the female and fertilises around 200 eggs, but only about 5 at a time. The female lays the eggs on fine leafed plants, from whence they hatch around 20 to 30 hours later. The fry begin to free swim around a week later.
