THE FISH
Guppy
Poecilia reticulata
| HABITS |
|
Well known among tropical fish, these fish are as popular today as ever because of the fantastic colour variations of the males. With selective breeding, the females, once drab colourless fish, now also exude in colours making them one of the hobby's most attractive fish. They are easy to keep and live well with most of the small community fish. However, you should not keep any fin nippers with these fish, as they are quite defenseless and their tails look like and taste like a good meal. They enjoy a high vegetable intake, so feed them well. To produce the best results, they should be fed a little at a time and often. See what’s on the sera menu below.

| BREEDING |
|
These fish produce broods of young on an average of every four to six weeks. The young are best separated from the main community or they run the risk of being eaten. A sera breeding net, hooked into the main aquarium, is a good place to grow the young until they are old enough to be released back into the main aquarium. These fish can regularly produce broods of 20 to 100 young at a time.
