The males are much more brightly coloured than the females. The male's entire body, including its fins, is a deep salmon-red colour. Females have a basic olive colouration with a golden iridescence to the scales. The fins are transparent light yellow.

These fish grow to around 12 to 15 cm.

In the wild state one would class them as carnivores eating crustaceans insects and insect larvae although algae and plants seem also to fit into their menu well.

| BREEDING |
|
This fish is not difficult to spawn. There should be several males for every female since courtship involves a good deal of chasing. When the male finally catches the female, the two come together over bushy vegetation. Females producing between 100 and 150 eggs. Eggs adhere to water plants and hatching occurs around 7-10 days. Java moss is an ideal plant for these fish to spawn on.
