THE FISH

Aulonocara baenschi

Aulonocara baenschi
HABITS Overall, these are relatively peaceful fish for their size, but like most Lake Malawis, they like their own territory. A definite rule when keeping these fish is that you should not keep two male fish together, as they will always fight. It is best to have an aquarium decorated with lots of rocks to provide the many nooks and crannies that these fish can employ as their territory.
SIZE The males grow to around 7 inches while the females remain a little smaller.

SEXING The male fish is more colourful while the female is mostly brownish.
BREEDING Since these fish are mouthbreeders, it is essential that the females and fry are provided with some cover like flat stones placed on the substrate.
