LAKE TANGANYIKA CICHLID

THE FISH
Compressed Cichlid
Altolamprologus compressiceps
| HABITS |
|
This fish is excellent for community aquariums, provided the community consists of Lake Tanganyika cichlids (but then, if you do keep Lake Tanganyika cichlids, you should not put in any fish from other origins anyway, except maybe some Ancistrus catfish for cleaning off the algae). It will not attack any fish larger than 1.5 inches, but it eats fry. The fish is rather peaceful and can excellently be kept with even the small shell-dwelling cichlids. Males will fight amongst each other but without causing any real damage. This species has a very interesting method of self defense: It does not try to escape when being attacked, but displays its back half to the aggressor, telling him 'bite me if you wish, I don't care'. And since the fish has very hard scales protecting it, it really does not care.

| BREEDING |
|
It is difficult to breed these fish. They will most likely spawn in caves but occasionally (maybe this is a subspecies) they will spawn in snail shells.
