THE FISH
Malawi Butterfly
Aulonocara jacobfreibergi
| HABITS |
|
A very attractive fish for the aquarium, the Malawi Butterfly is rather docile for being a rock cichlid. You should provide it with plenty of rock constructions with caves, etc. Do not keep different Aulonocara species in an aquarium as the fish might cross breed, leading to undesirable hybrids! Be sure to get information not only about the species but also about the exact location where they are found, as there are different local varieties that should not be cross bred. [By the way, this goes for most African cichlids. Retailers handle this by adding the location to the name of the fish-so it might read Aulonocara jacobreibergi 'Mamelala', for example. In most cases the males can be distinguished from each, but you have no chance with females. So if you ever wish to, or have to, buy a new female, things can become difficult if you do not know the location she came from.]
