THE FISH
P. nigripinnis
Paracyprichromis nigripinnis
| HABITS |
|
These are shoaling fish (!!!), which are quite uncommon for cichlids. However, all species of (Para-)Cyprichromis are shoal fish. They do fight amongst themselves, but this does not cause severe injuries. They are peaceful towards other fish. You have to provide PLENTY of swimming space, plus a sufficient amount of caves, with some flat stones at the bottom. You should keep them in groups of at least 8 - 10 specimens.

| SEXING |
|
Males have several bright blue horizontal stripes on their sides. Their dorsal and caudal fins have bright blue edges, while the anal fin is black. Females do not have the stripes on their sides, their dorsal fin has a dark blue edge, their caudal fin has no blue edge at all, and their anal fin is yellow.

| BREEDING |
|
These fish spawn on flat stones at the bottom of the aquarium (see above please). The females take the eggs into their mouths since they are mouthbrooders. Spawning is quite different from the closely related Cyprichromis leptosoma. These (P. nigripinnis) spawn in free water. The females catch the falling eggs in their mouths without dropping a single one, which is quite an artistic feat, don't you agree?
