HABITS These catfish are rather peaceful, but should be kept in large aquariums so that every fish can go their own way. Do not keep them with very small fish that might be regarded as prey! These fish do not tolerate high nitrate levels, so be sure to provide excellent water conditions. Using 'Aquatest' will help you keep the water conditions at their best.
SIZE These fish usually grow to 5 inches, but large specimens can reach nearly 10 inches.

SEXING It is impossible to sex these fish.
BREEDING Large cichlids (e.g. Frontosa) are a must when attempting to breed these catfish. They lay their eggs between freshly spawned cichlid eggs and have them guarded by a female cichlid, which is why they are called 'Cuckoo catfish'. The baby catfish hatch before the baby cichlids do and usually eat all of the cichlid eggs, as well as their unborn brothers and sisters. The surprised cichlid mother ends up releasing only baby catfish. It is not possible to breed these catfish in any 'normal' way, i.e. without appropriate cichlids being present!
