The males are dark and whitish-gray. They have up to six orange-yellow egg spots on their anal fin. The females are similar in colour, but are more gray-blue and are often checkered.

The Zebra Cichlid is a typical mouthbrooder. The species will continue to breed in an aquarium for many years. Males of the same size will fight and should be kept apart.
