THE FISH

Common Plec
(Sucking Catfish)

Hypostomus plecostomus
HABITS Although these fish grow very large, they are very popular in the hobby today. They are kept mainly for their ability to consume algae and for their amazing character. They have bony like scales all over except for a soft belly. They adapt well to life in an aquarium mixing well with other fish, although they can be a little territorial towards one another. They enjoy having bog wood as decoration so they can both hide and rasp away in the daytime, venturing out to eat at night. Although shy, mainly due to their nocturnal habits, these guys tame well if treated right and given time, effort, and the correct sera foods.
SIZE These fish can grow to 60 cm in natural waters but most specimen grow no larger than 30 cm in an aquarium.
