Firemouth

Firemouth - Photo
Cichlasoma meeki
HABITS Compared to the other Cichlids, this is quite a 'softy', but it is not recommended for the community aquarium. It gets on well with fish of a similar size, but not with fish that threaten it, and sometimes not even with other Firemouths. It likes cover, so provide plenty of wood or rock. It digs when mating, so hardier plants are recommended. Check the 'Plants' section for plants that would do well with this fish.
SIZE This fish grows to around 6 inches.

SEXING The male has a bright red area which extends over his belly and chin, up to his mouth. The female's colours are more subdued and her fins are shorter than the male's.
BREEDING Pairs of these fish usually get along well together. However, if the female is not ready for the male when he wants to spawn, he may kill her. She should be removed until her eggs are developed.
