Keyhole Cichlid

Aequidens maroni
HABITS Although one of the most peaceful of all Cichlids, the Keyhole Cichlid is your best choice if you choose to keep Cichlids. Because of its inability to get along with many fish, it belongs with the yellow section of fish. Since it does not grow too large, it should only be mixed with fish of its own size, in groups of no more than 2 to 6 fish. Another plus for keeping this fish is that it does not dig nor does it eat the plants in the aquarium.
SIZE These fish grow to around 9 cm and begin to breed at 6.5 cm.

SEXING It is not easy to identify the gender of these fish since both sexes develop long filaments on the dorsal and anal fins. Many argue that the male's fins are more elongated than the female's.
BREEDING When they are ready to spawn, a little tube begins to project from the vent. It should be noticed that the female's tube is heavier. A smooth surface is cleared off and the eggs are deposited there and fertilized. Both parents look after the eggs until the babies hatch. The babies can remain with the parents as a family for an undeterminable amount of time.
