Killifish (Aplocheilus panchax)

Killifish (Aplocheilus panchax) - Photo
Aplocheilus panchax
HABITS There are 2 subspecies of this fish: Aplo. panchax panchx, commonly found in Bangladesh, Nepal, India and the Malayan Peninsula and Aplo. panchax siamensis, which is found only in Thailand. As with other Aplocheilus speciesthe Aplo. panchax are predatory towards small fish. The males are not very tolerant of each other, so it is better to keep them in groups of 6 or more, and with a ratio of 1 male to 1-2 females. Water requirements are not critical, preferably a neutral pH level of 6.7-7.3 and temperatures between 68ºF and 77ºF.

Text supplied by the BKA for more information about killifish, visit the British Killifish Association website at www.bka.org.uk

SEXING While the body colouration is fairly uniform in the males, silver-blue with rows of red spots, their unpaired fins can have red, yellow or bluish-white sub-borders within black edging. Females are plain with more rounded and almost colourless fins.
BREEDING A pair or trio (1 male and 2 females) of these fish will spawn quite readily in a well furnished tank containing 2-3 gallons of water, having a neutral pH level and temperatures in the mid to upper 70's. The eggs, which are transparent and about 1 mm in diameter, are laid on the tops of floating or fine-leafed plants or on breeding mops. They must be removed from the breeding tank and placed in a separate tank containing 5 cm of water from their parents' tank, otherwise, the adults will eat them. The fry should emerge in 12-14 days and will immediately take newly hatched brine shrimp and some finely powdered foods.
