| HABITS |
These cichlids make good community fish as they do not burrow in the substrate and are not overly aggressive when they breed. The aquarium should have plenty of areas of thick plant growth, as well as some rockwork, and an open area with a couple of flat rocks. One of these rocks will be used to spawn on and will become the centre of a mated pair's territory. They can be sensitive to water changes, so make sure you condition all new water added to their aquarium. See 'Aquatest' to help keep your water at its optimum best.

| SEXING |
This is a difficult species to sex, even when they are mature. The best way to be sure of obtaining a pair is to buy a group of 6 or more youngsters and keep them together until two fish pair off.

| BREEDING |
These fish are open spawners and will lay their eggs on a stone. They make excellent parents, with both of them caring for the eggs and the young. They are often successful at rearing a brood of young in a normal community aquarium situation.
