HABITS This is probably the most popular of the Dwarf Cichlids, being easily available and so beautiful. Sadly, as is the case with others of this family, they are often lost because of lack of experience. Whilst long term they are adaptable, they do not like newly set up aquariums where the chemistry fluctuates. They also dislike ‘old’ or ‘flat’ water, which is water burdened with nitrate. Too much nitrite in the water will almost definitely see the demise of your fish. A simple general rule to follow is: The lower the nitrate level, the better the fish. Some good advice would be to use ‘Aquatest’ and purchase the fish once your aquarium is stable. Good water and good food will reward you with this gem of a fish that mixes quite well with lots of fish and thrives in many differing types of aquascapes.
SIZE Grows to around 2 inches.

SEXING The second ray of the dorsal fin is longer on the male fish, although this is sometimes hard to see. When they are in breeding colour, there is a distinct difference in the two sexes as the female develops a bright violet ventral area.
BREEDING These are not the easiest of fish to breed. They require soft, acidic water in which to lay their eggs. The eggs are laid on a rock or in a sandy depression with both parents tending to the eggs and the fry. They make very good parents.
