Rosy Barb

Barbus conchonius
HABITS This is a hardy fish indeed. Now that it comes in various colour formats, it has become quite a favourite in aquariums. It is a good middle of the tank show off. It feeds well right in front of you, while flashing its reddish hues at you. This fish generally mixes well with fish of its own size, but should be kept away from smaller finny fish. Although it likes to be kept in a group, it should not be kept with fish that sit back, as it will steal all the food. It looks good against darker backgrounds or plants. Be sure to get hardier plants, as it can be a bit of a plant nibbler. Please check the plant section for plants that fish do not normally eat.
SIZE This fish can grow to around 5 inches, although it is not often seen this big. Its most common size is 2-3 inches.

SEXING When not in breeding condition, the female looks like a plain silvery fish. The male displays a red colour which becomes exceptional at mating time.
BREEDING The male's breeding colour is a gleaming purplish-red with the black in its fins becoming accentuated. These fish spawn by scattering eggs into bunches of plants. The eggs hatch in about 24 hours and need to be kept separate from the parents. For best results, a large tank is recommended.
