HABITS This is a predatory cichlid that only looks and acts peaceful. It should only be kept with fish too large for it to swallow whole.

SEXING The males have a rust-coloured belly, but it is a rarity for the females to show the rust. The females usually have black blotches, which are only in evidence when the female is not sexually active.
BREEDING These fish are very gentle parents. They lay large amounts of eggs on a pre-cleaned rock out in the open. Their eggs hatch within 3 to 4 days depending on the water temperature and are free swimming in about a week.
