Tiger Barb
(Sumatra Barb)
Barbus tetrazona
| HABITS |
|
One of the most commonly seen fish in UK aquatic shops, the Tiger Barb comes with a reputation of being aggressive. You should be careful what fish you put it with. It should be kept away from the long finned fish like the guppies, angels, etc. When fed well, kept in good water, and in groups with fish of a similar size, this fish, as are its colour variants, is a joy to keep. It gives bright colour and good movement to the middle front of your aquarium. Its best colours are shown against a darkened backdrop or a planted backdrop. As is true with most Barbs, the Tiger Barb likes peaty soft but healthy water.

The males display a very red nose and dorsal fin when in peak condition. The females have a distinctively fatter belly.

| BREEDING |
|
As per classic Barb tactics, the males are a bit tough on the females, driving them into the plants, where they scatter their eggs. If you miss the event, they eat the eggs; so be prepared as soon as you see the first signs of courtship so that you can separate the eggs and fish.
