THE FISH

Uaru

Uaru - Photo
Uaru amphiacanthoides
HABITS Since these fish come from the same areas in the Amazon as both the Discus and Angels, they also do well only in soft acidic water, preferably with a low nitrate content since they hate nitrate. These fish are normally quite peaceful but should only be kept with fish of a similar size as the males can be quarrelsome amongst themselves. They enjoy quiet, sheltered aquariums so lots of large rocky cover and some large strong plants go down well.
SIZE These fish can grow up to 26 cm.

SEXING Since there are no colour differences between the sexes, it is not easy to determine the sex of these fish.
BREEDING The Uarus spawn in a dark quiet corner of the aquarium in good old fashion flowerpots or by digging under a rock. Both parents do sentry duty guarding the eggs, which hatch in around 30-36 hours. You will need to feed the fry on freshly hatched brine shrimp if you hope to raise the babies, as they have a reputation of being difficult to rear.
